From global developments to local consequences

PPF fireside chat on global-to-local perspectives

Yap Zhi Ling , Jun Heng and I attended PPF’s Fireside Chat yesterday on global-to-local perspectives with Senior Advisor Teo Chee Hean.

The discussion covered the increasingly volatile global landscape: from rising political polarisation in the US and Europe, to Russian pressure and the growth of far-right movements, as well as tensions in North Asia and fragile US–China relations over trade, technology and Taiwan.

Against this backdrop, Singapore must stay nimble, principled and unified. While we value ASEAN, our foreign policy is ultimately anchored in our long-term national interests rather than reliance on any single platform. The panel also emphasised that our resilience depends not just on diplomacy, but on strong domestic foundations, such as our national reserves, robust institutions and deep social cohesion.
